Current Events 6

Research one geography-related news story per week from the popular media

Geography-related current events can be found in the popular media (print newspapers like the Washington Post, magazines, and/or online websites such as National Geographic, Science Daily, etc).  News stories with geography-related content can include anything related to weather (hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, record snowfalls or temperature, etc), natural disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, etc), climate-change/global warming, pollution, demographics, border & boundary changes/disputes, mapping, species habitat, water, etc.  The one realm into which I do not want you to stray is anything related to outer space (planets, asteroids, NASA-anything).  Granted, geography encompasses and touches an enormous range of scientific and cultural areas, but this is a geography, not an astronomy course  For a story to be considered “current,” it must have been published within the past two weeks of it being used for submission.

I have read an article featured in NASA’s Global Climate Change page published last August 2021 about “Protecting the Ozone Layer also Protects Earth’s Ability to Sequester Carbon”. According to NASA’s Earth Science News Team, protecting the ozone layer will prevent the earth from warming to a huge increase in temperature that rises to 0.85 degrees Celsius or 1.53 degrees Fahrenheit. This study shows that keeping the ozone layer guarded or protected blocks the harmful ultraviolet radiation or regulates the ability to draw carbon from the atmosphere.
