Pick a newspaper or magazine (online is fine) and find an article or passage that gives an example of descriptive relativism. If you don’t know what descriptive relativism is, go back and reread Chapter 1.

Post it here and say why it is an example of descriptive relativism. Then say whether you think the thing being described is morally right, morally wrong, or morally neutral, and why. Your response should demonstrate familiarity with the relevant chapter in our textbook and the Crash Course Philosophy video(s) assigned.  Write one or two paragraphs, not a research paper.

Discussion 1 Answer

The passage above demonstrates the leadership of The United Methodist Church’s employment of the natural law theory. This theory posits that the discernment of the purpose of something determines its proper use. Based on church’s teaching, the purpose of sexual relation is dictated by whether it is facilitated in a heterosexual marriage or relationship. Hence, it cannot be carried out among homosexual couples and by implication, the church discourages its pastors from marrying homosexual couples
