Discussion: Week 2
Read the Allegory of the Cave from Plato’s Republic. Glaucon says the people in the story are “strange prisoners,” while Socrates replies that they are “like ourselves.” Why do you suppose Socrates compares us to these prisoners? Are you one of them?
Discussion: Week 2 Answer
In the allegory of the cave ,us humans are considered to be the prisoners bound by chains that represent biases. This is a very good example of humans not being able to change or take a huge leap of faith because of the comfort zone or beliefs that we grew up in or with. The shadows represent what is taught to us, be they right or wrong. Lastly, the statues represent reality, it’s the truth we find once we leave the cave and open our minds to consider other contradicting views.
