Research Project3–Discussion Post IV Answer

Controversial artworks often entail elements that shock or scandalize the common beliefs in the society. Taboo issues, such as pornography, death, and anything that scandalizes or mocks the norm is identified as a controversial artwork. Many artists have become victims to the judgments of the common society about this. One of these is Dana Schutz’s “Open Casket.” Not only did she use a taboo subject like death, but also as a protest against racism. Relating this to her painting, “Emmett Till,” the works all convey the meaning of how color is often used as an element to disguise discrimination in America
