Discussion 4 – Questions on Chapter 3 Answer (2)

  1. What is convection and how is energy transferred on Earth by this energy transfer mechanism?

Convection refers to the vertical and horizontal mixing of air. Through this mechanism, warm air (which is less dense and more buoyant) will rise. Heat causes warm air to expand and this is why it rises. As the warm air rises, it absorbs energy from the surface and pulls cooler air from the sides. The rise of warm air pulls the cooler air downward, therefore creating a loop called the convection cell. Convection mechanism is responsible for the effective circulation of energy in the lower atmosphere

Discussion 4 – Questions on Chapter 3 Answer

When will most places usually get their hottest month each year?

For most places, the hottest month each year will be about two months after the summer solstice, which is August.

The actual timing of the highest average monthly temperatures is affected by continentality and seasonal wind patterns. In Santa Monica the warmest months is August to September.
