Week 6 Discussion

Part 1 will be about sampling.  Sampling is at the core of statistical research.  Part 2 is based on the SPSS book and revolves around basic descriptive statistics. Answer both 1 and 2:

  1. Give a brief description of a study that you would like to do where you would collect sample data. What would your population be? How would you go about collecting your information from this population? What type of sampling technique would you be using and why is this appropriate for what you want to study?

  1. Complete either the tattoo example or the rank in college example from the SPSS workbook. Paste the descriptive output into your posting (this must be included to show you did it). Give a brief explanation of what descriptive statistics are. What is the output from your chosen example? What are the findings, frequencies and percentages in the output?

Week 6 Discussion Answer

A study I would like to do is determine the percentage of CSUN students who are working part-time. The population would be all CSUN students. To determine a random sample from this population, I will request from the registrar’s office a list of all CSUN students. I will then use simple random sampling by assigning a random number to each student. I will then generate a list of random numbers and those that correspond to the student’s number will be included in the sample. This is appropriate for the study because I have the full list of student names.
