Discussion Board #3 – FAMILY CULTURE

Write about one holiday ritual you have in your family and the details surrounding it. Bring in cultural components of your background if you’d like. Additionally, describe how this holiday ritual influences consumer purchases you make as a family. For example, what specific foods are purchased for the holiday, or certain gifts shopped for the holiday, or other items consumed due to the holiday. If you have something original in your family, share that (rather than the obvious – say pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving). So, what holiday rituals does your family have and what purchases increase due to it? Does your family have anything they do that is a bit more unique that maybe other families don’t always do? In my family, we sing the traditional Happy Birthday song, but have another song we sing after the traditional tune each birthday celebrated. It’s our quirky thing. What does your family do? What do they celebrate? What foods do they have? Tell us about the cultural side of your family.

Discussion Board #3 – FAMILY CULTURE Answer

The holiday that I have chosen is Nowruz. It is an Iranian/Persian holiday. We also refer to it as the Persian New Year.

There are certain rituals that accompany this tradition. For instance, it is well-known that many Persian families will keep their homes extra tidy before this season. Henceforth, while it may appear to be a bit excessive, my mom always manages to purchase numerous cleaning materials a few weeks before this holiday hits. She ensures that the house is extra tidy, especially because we want to be able to welcome this new period with as much cleanliness and purity as possible.
