Week 4 Discussion Answer
Differentiate the various types of DNA repair (Lecture 7):
- Proofreading by DNA Pol III
Several mutations occur even during replication whenever an incorrect nucleotide is inserted by DNA Polymerase. Luckily, DNA Polymerase III can correct what it has done wrong. Though it makes a lot of errors, 99% of these are proofread immediately. The enzyme basically detects the error and reverses its direction thereby performing a 3 to 5 exonuclease activity that cuts and replaces incorrect nucleotides.
