Week 11 discussion Answer

Sex chromosomes (XX females, XY males) determine the sex of an individual in humans. Despite the fact that the X and Y chromosomes have vastly different quantities and sets of genes (the X has roughly 1,000 genes and the Y has only a few dozen), they both evolved from ordinary autosomes during the early evolution of mammals. The physical differentiation of sex chromosomes has been caused by recombination restriction followed by gene loss on the Y chromosome.
