Booker T. Washington promoted the principle that African American should focus on economic progress. He argued that African Americans must first gain vocational skills and literacy and rise from poverty before achieving rational integration and political power. He also argued that they can do this by temporarily accepting segregation and discrimination against them. He believed that the Jim Crow system can help them get work and be protected from violence.
