Martin Luther King, Jr. is essential to the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the broader civil rights struggle because he was one of the ardent proponents of civil disobedience, he served as the leadership figure that united the African Americans in their struggle and inspired the movement in many ways, and attracted national and international attention that added pressure to the U.S. government to finally address civil rights.
