Final Exam Essay Answer

16.

In Sonnet 130, Shakespeare uses metaphor to state how his mistress is beyond her flaws. Metaphor suggests similarity between objects. Then he states that “If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.” In another line he states that “her lips are less red than coral.” Shakespeare mocks his mistress and states the flaws in her. The importance of the use of this symbol is to add expressive detail to the poem. The metaphor helps to make the poem sound more realistic to the audience.
