Journal 8
Everyone needs to have connections in their lives; whether that’s with their family, friends or just people we live around or people we come across in passing. Connections are important for human survival. For this week’s journal, we’re going to focus on comparing the interactions of The Creature with De Lacey and Coates with the neighborhood kids.
Write one full page discussing the connection that The Creature has with the blind man: De Lacy and then also discuss the relationship that Coates has with the neighborhood kids. Use the questions below to help guide your response:
- How do these characters interact with each other?
- What are the values that they place in the relationships that they are trying to build?
- What do you think the conversation would be like if The Creature had a chance to meet Coates or the neighborhood kids?
Journal 8 Answer
Everyone needs to have a sense of belongingness in a community. By connecting with other people, one could live with lower negative emotions and higher empathy for others. The neglect of the need to connect puts relationships with others at risk. This situation is observed in the work of Mary Shelly entitled “Frankenstein”. The creature approached the blind man because he hopes to be understood and that he can be finally accepted by others. He thinks that De Lacey being blind is unprejudiced about his physical appearance and that the man could convince others that he is not a monster but a gentle creature.
