Week 11 Discussion
The media have a major influence on society. It is important for social scientists to pay attention to this and what is being presented in the media. It is also important to be able to recognize and make sense of signs (ex: symbols) and what signs represent. Part 2 revolves around correlational analysis in SPSS. Complete both 1 and 2:
1. Cover either content analysis (ex: television, movies, magazine, etc.) or the study of signs (ex: religious, military, national, etc.). Describe what you would like to study. How would you go about studying this? What is the importance of learning about your selection? How does this affect viewers, members, society, or what have you?
2. Complete the correlation example from the SPSS workbook (p. 174). Paste the statistics output into your posting (Descriptive Statistics, Correlations, and Scatterplot). This output must be included to show you did it. What is the output from the Facebook Friends and Happiness study? Describe the table output and the scatterplot. What might you conclude from the findings?
Week 11 Discussion Answer
I’d like to conduct a content analysis of comments on Facebook regarding body-shaming. I want to know how people on social media think of body image and if people are likely to shame or support celebrities regardless of their body size. To do this, I will gather comments on a Facebook page. Based on these comments, I will generate emerging themes, whether positive, neutral, or negative.
