Week 2 Assignment
Perform a close reading of the following three works at the end of Schlib and Clifford , Chapter 3:
- “Usl at the Stadium” by Rivka Galchen (96–101)
- From “How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco’s Life” by Jon Ronson (101–104)
- From Is Shame Necessary?by Jennifer Jacquet (104–105)
Put these three works in conversation with one another by connecting literature to real-life disputes: public shaming in contemporary life. In other words, make an argumentative claim that links Galchen’s story with the issues that Ronson and Jacquet raise. How do the three works compare and contrast with one another in their portrayal of public shaming? What is the implicit or underlying message of each text? Is there a common thread among all three texts?
Week 2 Assignment Answer
Social Shaming and its Victims
The video on Usl’s infamous sleeping incident during a game has created an unnecessary noise that has pressed on the living conditions of Usl himself. Although this situation was new for Usl and was particularly daunting for him, this incident has already happened before. Social critics have already seen it before and understand the fact that it does create long-lasting impact on the person being castrated from the society through shame campaigns.
