There are different types of quantitative research designs that justify or support themselves in nursing. These include retrospective designs, cross-sectional designs, and longitudinal designs. Longitudinal designs, which are sometimes called prospective designs, include panel, trend, follow-up, and crossover designs. Each of these designs has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, among the advantages of a cross-sectional design is that it is cost-efficient, does not require too much of a researcher’s resources, and can produce information about multiple variables.
