PICOT is an acronym used to help develop clinical research questions and guide you in your search for evidence:

= Patient population

= Intervention or issue of interest

= Comparison of interventions or comparison of interests

= Outcome

= Time frame

For example, you may wish to research the effects of interrupted sleep on cognition of ICU patients 65 or older.

Using this PICOT model,

In ICU patients who are 65 or older, how does interrupted sleep (awakened one time or more in four hours) as compared to uninterrupted sleep influence the patient’s cognitive ability over 5 days?

Nursing Intervention in Childhood Obesity

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] (2019) defines childhood obesity as when an individual who is not more than 19 years of age has weight that is beyond average in comparison to others of his age and height. The CDC considers childhood obesity a “serious problem” (1) in the country that affects millions of children and adolescents. Between 2017 and 2018, obesity among young individuals was at 19.3%, which can be translated to around 14.4 million youth between 2 and 19 years of age.
