Exam 2
1. Name the two types of reversible enzyme inhibitors. Describe the mechanism of how each type of inhibitor interferes with enzyme activity and describe how substrate concentration could impact inhibition.
2. You are observing a reaction and discover that the reaction vessel is cool to the touch. The reaction also results in a decrease in entropy. Use Biol303 terminology to answer your questions.
A. Is the reaction spontaneous? Explain your reasoning and what predictions you can make about Gibbs free energy.
B. If this is a step in glycolysis, what will relatively high amounts of ATP do to the rate of glycolytic activity in that cell?
C. Is the reaction catabolic or anabolic? What does it means and Explain your reasoning.
Be sure to label your answers 1, 2, 3 so I know which one you are answering.
3. Trace the steps of a newly synthesized glycoprotein that is destined for exocytosis, starting with the formation of the polypeptide and ending with secretion of the protein into the environment. Make sure to identify all critical steps as well as each structure and component involved.
Exam 2 Answer
1. Name the two types of reversible enzyme inhibitors.
Describe the mechanism of how each type of inhibitor interferes with enzyme activity and describe how substrate concentration could impact inhibition.
The two types of reversible enzyme inhibitors are noncompetitive and competitive inhibitors.
The competitive inhibitors bind to the substrate binding site, effectively blocking the conversion of the substrate to product by the enzyme. This inhibition happens because the inhibitor has a similar strucutre as the substrate.
