I am giving you a little bit of choice for Timed Writing #3. Choose one of the three to write your essay on:

1. What are the differences between living in the United States and your own country?

2. What are the similarities between living in the United States and your own country?

3. Is it a good idea for an immigrant to become a United States citizen? For this question, you will write more a pro/con essay rather than a compare/contrast, but they both follow the same format.

Isolation and Belongingness: Becoming a Citizen as an Immigrant

            Bharati Mukherjee’s essay, Two Ways to Belong in America, explains how being an immigrant and being a citizen in the United States poses two different and often contrasting ways to experience living in the states. Just like any individual who wants to achieve the “American dream,” there are two ways to live in America: be an immigrant and retain one’s cultural and ethnic identity; or to become a citizen, and allowing assimilation to penetrate even one’s personal identity as an American
