Lemon juice contains acid that releases hydrogen ions in a solution. As H+ accumulates in the digestive tract and is absorbed into the blood, Eli’s blood pH starts to fluctuate below 7.35. To revert the pH level to normal, a buffer must be administered. From what I have read in our book Anatomy and Physiology by Betts et al. (2013), the body maintains a strict balance between the concentrations of acids and bases in the blood.
