According to the National Institute of Health (2015), mutations in the mitochondrial DNA can cause mitochondrial genetic diseases. Though the majority of DNA is stored in the nucleus of each cell, the mitochondria, which are the energy-producing structures in each cell, contain their own DNA. The body does not have enough energy to carry out its normal duties when the mitochondria are not functioning properly.
