Please listen to this entire piece on growing up.  It discusses how we are affected by how we are raised by our parents and gives several different perspectives.  Please use specific terms and concepts from the reading on parents this week,  as well as the podcast in your answers.

Please discuss the following:

  • Why do you think parenting is different today than it may have been in the days of riding your bike outside until a gong rang (how has the development of parenting changed?)?
  • Would you allow your children to do any of the dangerous things suggested by Gever Tulley?  Why or why not?
  • Do you agree that not having experiences exploring the world around them has made for duller children?
  • How did you feel about the adoptive/foster mother in Lemn Sissay piece?  Could you understand her actions or see things from her perspective at all?  What stage of parenting was she in do you think?

Please respond to the posts of your classmates. (at least two):

  • Do you agree or disagree with any of their thoughts on the piece?  Why or why not?

Need help with your discussion preparation?

Parenting before is more traditional and does not satisfy all the needs of the children. Creating these boundaries limit children from enjoying their childhood and how they experience the world around them.
