As always, there are several parts to this Discussion Assignment, so please read carefully, and do this assignment when you have time to “dig in.”

Part One

Make a list of themes that are present in the story Li Chi Slays the Serpent.pdf. Once you have a list, think about what is most central to the story. If you were going to retell the story as a dance, what would you dance? If you were going to paint it, what would you paint a picture of?

Once you have those ideas in mind, watch this American retelling of the story which took place at a festival. Note how parts of the story are being represented. What is happening visually that is meaningful to you? What else is emphasized in the storytelling?

Part Two

Now that you have spend some time carefully considering myths and folktales, please write 2-3 paragraphs of reflection in which they explore answers to the following question:

Why should we bother reading myths and folktales? What is to be gained by reading literature of this sort? Given that they do not reflect either our culture or our era in history, what possible benefits could we get from reading stories like these?

There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. You are writing to explore and develop ideas about what’s possible.

To get credit for this assignment, as with all of our written reflections throughout this semester, you must

  • A) respond to the question asked of you
  • B) meet the minimum length requirement for the assigned reflection,

Myths are more than just imaginary stories that might never come true. Throughout our classes, we have read myths on ancient serpents, magical leggings, and different kinds of mythical monsters and fictional scenarios.
