  2. If your first name starts with letters A – L, listen to the podcast On Being with Krista Tippet where she interviews spiritual vocalist Joe Carter. You will hear Carter explain the tradition of spirituals, where they came from, and stories about his formerly enslaved relatives who sang them. 
  3. If your first name starts with letters M – Z, read the essay, The Sexual Politics of the Blues by Hazel Carby and hear her discuss Black feminism and how blues singers used their voice to be empowered. 
  4. Make an initial post consisting of two paragraphs by Saturday February 5th 11:59. 6 points possible. Minimum 200 words for full credit.

In your first paragraph, summarize what you listened to/read. In your second paragraph, comment on what surprised you, changed your opinion completely, or sparked further research about the pre-jazz musical influences you learned about. 

Then, reply to two of your peers by Monday February 7th 11:59pm. (2 points per reply. 20 words minimum for full credit) agreeing, respectfully offering a different perspective, or asking further questions. One of your replies must be to someone who listened to or read the opposite resource as you.
