Welcome to ENG 101!  Let’s launch this course by learning about each other and what we like to read!  One way to improve our writing is to read inspiring texts from a variety of authors and genres. These texts can be considered “mentor texts” and are an effective way to help us improve our craft.

Create a visual of 3 titles of books that address the following: your favorite from the past, one that you are currently involved in and one you would like to read in the future. This is a fun way to get to know each other, our interests, and inspire some future reading!

My sample above illustrates my past, present, and future titles that cover a variety of topics and genres.  I began Middlemarch several years ago and hope to finish someday!  The Great Believers is a new title on my bedside table and highly recommended by a friend for the writing style. Understanding the role of culture and diversity in the classroom and our society is the focus of Global Dexterity.  I am enjoying the insights of this author on these important topics and hope to read it in my future. These titles focus on my hobbies and my professional world as well.

Helpful Hint:  Book titles are easy to search for online. Once you locate your cover, take a screenshot and then copy and paste it to a word document. You will need to upload it to your files in Canvas and then embed the image in your reply to this assignment.

Once you create your visual, post it online using the reply at the bottom of this page.  In your post, discuss your reading choices, why you chose the titles, and your thoughts about the reading (if the books have already been read).  Think about building interest for us to want to read your choices!  Your post should encourage responses from your peers.

Post 1 response to another image by a peer and reflect on their choices.  Try to select a visual that hasn’t been reviewed to ensure that all visuals have feedback. In your response, consider the following conversation points. Have you read the same texts?  Are there recommendations that you can suggest that connect to their choices? Your response should encourage continued conversation with your peers!

Final Replies:  Due Saturday at 11:59 pm

Reply to at least two posts to your visual by your peers that encourages continuation of the discussion and learning about each other and reading interests.  Your responses should be thoughtful, constructive and encourage dialogue with the purpose to learn more about your peers.
