Before Wednesday:

    1. Choose one concept from Chapter 5 – “Television and Film” that interested you the most to discuss and respond to. 
    2. UCLA professor Tananarive Due, who taught a class with Get Out as it’s centerpiece film says “Peele created a space for audiences to feel empathy for the black lead character while at the same time, helping to show what some of our anxieties are as black people living as a minority in this country.”  Why is this important? What do you think this film contributes to our national discussion on race relations in the United States?
  • Finally, after your response, write a thought-provoking discussion question for your group about an issue or issues brought up in our reading, Pop Culture for Beginners Chapter 5 – “Television and Film” pgs 111-134, or connected to the film. Remember: choose specific, thoughtful, and answerable questions! 

Before Friday:

  • Respond  to each of the other students in your group (at least once) and answer their discussion question in a thoughtful response post!

  • Every main post should be a minimum 200+ words. Write as much as you like, but make sure it is at least 2 paragraphs and 200 words minimum.

If you are responding to a non-written text (like audio/video or film) you might also ask: 

  • What social or ideological messages does this work convey, whether intentionally or not?
  • What do I think of its style or its use of form?
  • Which moments leap out at me for visual, auditory, or dramatic reasons?
  • Which scenes or moments challenge or disturb me?
