FACT: In the early 19th century, the new American nation was growing at a fast pace. So fast, in fact, that we started a second war with Great Britain just to prove our nation belonged on the world stage. Not only was our nation growing internationally, but Thomas Jefferson’s arrangement of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 physically doubled the size the nation. Seemingly forgotten was the promise from the Declaration of Independence that “all men were created equal”. Even if that phrase was taken literally, it still left out all female Americans from fully participating in the newest form of government…democracy.  As focused as the nation was on proving itself as a whole, some parts and people within it were forgotten.
