Learning How to Learn

To address the diverse STEM disciplines we have in this class , let’s try to watch some researched-based videos about learning how to learn.  I want you to learn some transferable skills that can apply to your other classes or future career in addition to learning chemistry. 

Initial Post

  1. Watch PEN Principle #4: Spacing-Out Practice Enhances Memory (4:41)

  5. Create a weekly schedule
    1. Find a weekly schedule template that works for you. You may use my sample weekly schedule (Links to an external site.). 
    2. Add items that are already scheduled for the week, including classes, appointments, and work.
    3. Add activities that need to be done that week but don’t have a set time.  For example, homework assignments and reviews.  Try to spread these activities across the week so that they are not all concentrated on already busy days.
    4. Add the activities that make life worthwhile, such as spending time with friends, or going to the gym.
    5. Highlight the most important things so you can find them immediately. Color code item by type, e.g. classes are purple, work is blue.
    6. Especially the day(s) and time(s) that you will be doing ALEKS, Lab Assignments, and Discussion.

  1. What is spacing-out practice and what’s leverage context?  How does each strategy work?
