Prompt #5 – The 70s,

Do you enjoy music from the 70s? If so, which are your favorite genres and artists? If not, why not?

Let me admit that I was a teenager and young adult during the 1970s, I graduated H.S. in 1976. So the music of the 70s is my music. Particularly for me, the music of the late 60s and early 70s. It’s a well know idea that the music of our tween and teen years holds a very special place in our musical development. For me, that’s the early 70s. I know the music of the early 70s better than the music of any other period, but at the same time I am the least objective about evaluating this music that is so central to my musical soul.

One thing I appreciate about early 70s rock was the diversity of emerging style and artists. New styles that where hinted at in the music of the late 60s were fully explored and perfected in the 70s.  For instance, the art rock and progressive rock ideas of the Beatles inspired 70s progressive groups like Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Queen.

The bluesy rock and country rock of the Rolling Stones, The Who, and Cream led the way for 70s groups like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and many others. Funk, Glam Rock, Fusion, Disco, Punk, so much to discuss.

To be honest, I am more drawn to either the 1960s, 1980s or the 1990s. I love the folk rock of the 60s, the love songs of the 80s and of course, the boy bands of the 90s. Me being drawn to the 1970s is more of unintentional. For instance, my favorite band is Aerosmith and it drew my interest because of the movie Armageddon and its official theme song “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” That song is one of my all-time favorites.
