  1. Explain four instances of symbolism and figurative language in the songs.

The songs made use of several symbolism and figurative language which added depth to the piece. In Streets of Philadelphia, for example, the Springsteen talked about being “bruised and battered” which refers physical symptoms of an illness. Similarly, the line “wasting away” refers to dying. In the second stanza, he talks about hearing the voices of “friends vanished and gone” which refers to people who have passed away or died.
