Throughout the course, the exploration of sensitive topics regarding injustices, abuse, and violence has paved the way for an ongoing conversation about the challenges that individuals face. The circumstances of vulnerable populations appear to heavily influence their probability of succumbing to these problems. In this reflection, cases of injustice emerge because of society’s inability to tackle the cycle of abuse, discrimination, and violence. These are cases that are intertwined with each other – no matter how dreaded people’s dispositions are. To an extent, I resonated and empathized with some of the characters discussed. Andrea Elliott’s Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival and Hope in an American City portrayed the scarcity of opportunities in life for impoverished children, whereas Jorja Leap’s Project Fatherhood: A Story of Courage and Healing in One of America’s Toughest Communities envisioned recreating a world where children are reconnected with their families. In both these pieces, it is evident how danger and precariousness attach themselves to the lives of people who are stuck in injustice. Along with the materials in the course and the two books aforementioned, violence, abuse, and injustices resurface to make people question how systemic imbalances have affected American society.
