Mike deGruy’s speech Hooked by an octopus is the one that I believe made the most effective use of gestures. He is unpretentious, spontaneous, and conversational. With it, he can easily hold an audience’s attention and even keep me from recognizing that the video is close to its end. It is far more casual than the grandiose style favoured by public speakers in the past, but it places a premium on communication and idea exchange—not on performance or sermonizing. His motions are inextricably linked to what he thinks, feels, and says.
