The oppressive representations of Women of color that arose during the enslavement period demonstrate the subjugation of Black females on an intellectual level (King 1973; D. White 1985; Carby 1987). These oppressive perceptions and prejudices of Black women have historically constrained Black women’s responsibilities and lowered the bar for what is deemed appropriate. I presented stereotypes of Black women, including the jezebel, matriarch, Sapphire, mammy, welfare mother, sad mulatto, furious Black women, and influential Black women.
