Essay on The Placebo Effect: Impact on Illnesses
Write an essay about The Placebo Effect: Impact on Illnesses
The placebo pertains more to the therapeutic ability of a particular procedure to cure a patient. Given that it is not necessarily because of its content, there are arguments that the placebo may not have an immense impact on the patient. However, there have been some cases whereby the placebo has affected the patient positively – and in some cases, cured the patient. An illness that is responsive to a placebo would be autoimmune diseases. More specifically, a study found that patients who had chronic inflammatory autoimmune diseases were able to experience effective treatment with the placebo effect (Lückemann et al., 2020, p. 588). This was the result of the learned responses of the immune system. In this case, they found out that by reducing the dosage given to the patients, they were able to achieve a stronger treatment as the patients’ immune systems responded better. Although autoimmune diseases are not necessarily terminal at all times, this does present hope that their life-threatening complications can be managed with a placebo.
