Essay about Personal Statement
The personal statement should include the following for College Counseling/Student Services & School Counseling:
A) Why do you want to become a school counselor or college counselor working in student affairs?
B) What experience(s) do you have in PreK-12 (school counseling applicants) or in higher education (college counseling applicants)?
C) How do you/would you work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds? Provide examples.
D) Describe any professional development activities in which you currently participate or plan to participate.
Personal Statement
My interest in the field of counseling started due to my exposure to social work – whether in a professional or personal setting. I have been immensely interested in learning more about sociology as a student. On top of that, I have committed myself beforehand to an internship at the Villa Garden Health Center from which I learned more about social work. The exposure I have acquired has taught me the value of counseling. I have personally interacted with counselors in the past – most of whom were eager to assist me whenever I encountered academic or personal issues. Due to these interactions, I realized that there are a plethora of issues being faced by students. I have also worked as a student worker for the Business Division of Glendale Community College (GCC). Through my experience with GCC, I have learned how to mingle with students who have encountered various types of issues and conflicts in their time. Due to all of these reasons, I realize that my work as a school or college counselor would allow me to reach out and help as many students as I possibly can.
