Excerpt

Stress is a massive contributor to the health outcomes of individuals as it is an important factor in health behaviors. Because of this reason, the study of stress is the backbone in recognizing the probability of developing illnesses. Aligned with these ideas, different racial groups may have various life experiences and stressors that can contribute to their higher risk of acquiring illnesses. This perspective was heavily highlighted by John Henry’s hypothesis – which looked into the intensive stress experienced by certain racial groups that experience higher rates of discrimination and prejudice. To address these concerns, there is a constant need to develop a more empathetic and socially inclusive way of addressing stress in social environments. Especially for communities where discrimination is rampant, acknowledging the severity of the social and mental wellbeing of vulnerable groups is a step towards cultivating better health practices.
