Essay on Chicano History

Instructions
The guiding questions below are drawn from the readings and lectures for week two.

The Chicana/o Movement is a product of activism by a new generation of Mexican American activists. Fomented by the Mexican American experience during WW II both at home and abroad, this new generation of activists openly repudiates the failed promises of assimilation. This rejection to an assimilationist strategy resulted in a new sense of identity, one that attempts to reclaim a rich indigenous past that draws from culture to reclaim an almost obliterated history and language.

The paper discusses the role of Mexican American during the war, and how they fought for their rights to assure that they are well respected by the people.

The participation of Mexican American women during the war was not recognized especially in terms of assisting the others during this time. As the men were fighting during the war, the women held the fort wherein they created organizations which will help the families cope up with the current war situation during that time. Organizations were created to help the women manage while their loved ones were in the middle of the war. They also took care of the veterans who came home from the war and try to help the veterans by building recreational facilities for them.
