Definitive management is focused on addressing the etiology or cause of a disease to achieve complete resolution from the condition. Ideally, definitive treatment is desired in most management options. However, there are some cases where definitive treatment cannot be achieved such as in medical conditions where symptomatic treatment options are the only ones that are available. Nevertheless, there are also several instances where definitive management may be done but holistic management should also be considered and done. Targeting the risk and contributory factors of the disease is just as important, if not more, than definitive management because this can provide a holistic treatment that not only address the problem but also decreases the chance for recurrence and improves the overall prognosis of patients. Holistic management may be performed through either or both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management that could be indicated for the condition of a patient. In this paper, Caries Management by Risk Assessment or CAMBRA will be discussed which is a management option for dental caries which consider not only the state or severity of dental caries but also gives attention to the risk and contributory factors of dental caries. Prior to the discussion of CAMBRA, normal gingiva and physical examination of oral health will be discussed along with the pathophysiology and risk factors of dental caries to better understand this condition. Towards the end of the paper, a patient case will also be discussed where the concept of CAMBRA will also be applied.
