In your proposal, tell me the following:
- which sonnetyou’d like to write your research paper about
- which school of literary criticism(e.g., New Criticism, Feminist criticism, Psychoanalytic criticism, Marxist criticism, Deconstruction, Postcolonial criticism, New Historicism, Queer theory, and/or Critical Race Theory) you plan to use as a lens for your analysis. For descriptions of each critical approach, see Schlib and Clifford, Chapter 8, as well as the following materials about Critical Race Theory:
- which general issue or topicare you interested in exploring. For ideas about issues and topics, see:
- issues in Schlib and Clifford, Chapter 3 (pages 79–83)
- topics in Schlib and Clifford, Chapter 4 (pages 124 and 126–128)
- sample researched arguments in Schlib and Clifford, Chapter 7 (pages 237–264)
- An argument that uses a literary work to examine a social issue
- An argument that deals with existing interpretations of a literary work
- An argument that places a literary work in historical and cultural context
Please also include:
- How you arrived at this issue or topic
- What interests you? Why?
- What do you already know about your issue or topic?
- What questions do you currently have about your issue or topic?
Your proposal should articulate a series of questions that will guide your project. And your research should then help you find the answers to these questions that you have about your topic.
Finally, your proposal should state the preliminary thesis your paper will address. Although the thesis statement you provide at this point does not have to be the same one that you will use in your research paper, it should be focused enough so that you would be proud to use it in your final paper. This means that your preliminary thesis statement can be several sentences and should give your audience a precise sense of what you intend to argue about your topic.
