Socialization/Family

Question

Please watch this Ted Talk after finishing the reading for this week.  If you are not familiar with Malala Yousafzai’s story see her profile here (Links to an external site.). (Support your answers with direct connections from the readings and the Ted Talk.)

Then please respond to the following:

  • What are Malala’s father’s goals for his children’s socialization?
  • What was the outcome for Malala?
  • From her father’s speech, what type of family are Malala and her brothers being raised in? Patriarchal or egalitarian?
  • The readings this week talk about the family systems theory, which it describes as, “This system of rules and roles…” Based on what her dad said, what are some of the rules and roles in their family?
  • This week’s reading also introduces parenting styles – what parenting style is Malala’s parents using on her and her brothers? Tell us specifically where you see an example.
  • What are the results when a family’s values, beliefs, and attitudes differ greatly from societal norms as they do in this family? (Feel free to discuss the positives and negatives – obviously, it’s not always going to be as extreme as in this situation).

Please connect with at least two classmates:

  • Did they see anything or add anything that enhanced your understanding of the readings or the Ted Talk?
  • Do you have any questions regarding their responses?
