Discussion of Essays: Caplan, Gibson, Lipson & Reindle – Caplan 1

Question

In what respect is the challenge that students face incorporating research into their essays (Lipson & Reindle) similar to the copyright issues that Caplan & Gibson discuss in their essays?  In your own experience, how is this use of property similar or different? In failing to cite sources properly,  do students run the risk of appropriating property? Do you subscribe to Caplan’s belief that all ideas should be in public domain?  Therefore, should citation in student research papers be eliminated? Is it appropriate for people to claim their ideas as “property”? You can discuss any issues you have had with citing in prior papers.
