Discussion: Understanding the Ticker Tape Pattern

Imagine you are teaching a group of children in elementary school about speed.  In language appropriate to such an audience, describe a procedure they can use to calculate the speed of an object.  Provide them with the example based on your ticker tape, determine the speed of the motion that generated your tape segment.  Please assume that the ticker tape apparatus makes a dot every 1/60th of a second.

How fast an object is moving in a specific amount of time is called SPEED. When we want to find the speed of an object, we use the formula:

Speed = distance travelled / time it took to travel that

For example in this ticker shape seen below, how many dots are there? There are 7, right? Each dot is equal to 1/60th of a second.
