Module 3 – DQ #1 Answer
The broader historical context starts with the history of Hawaii itself. In the podcast, it was described that this was during the Imperial Era during the 1800s (1:42). It was mentioned that the Secretary of State during this period – New Hampshire’s Secretary Hay – belittled the Spanish-American War. This period encouraged the intervention of white people onto others because of the propagation of the white man’s burden. As it was described in the podcast, this white man’s burden refers to how it is their responsibility as “enlightened” people to spread the Anglo-Saxon Christian ways (3:42).
