To prepare you for Essay 1, the Comparative Analysis Paper, this discussion asks you to begin analyzing and synthesizing the short stories from Jhumpa Lahiri’s collection Interpreter of Maladies.

In a response of at least 250 words, compare “Mrs. Sen’s” and “This Blessed House” (see “Strategies for Writing a Comparative Paper” in Schlib and Clifford, p. 161–167). Prepare for your response by making a list of similarities and differences between the stories. Then, review your lists and ask yourself:
- What pattern emerges from these observations of the text?
- What is significant about these similarities and differences?

Week 4 Discussion Answer
The general constructs of the Interpreter of Maladies and the stories included in it are focused on defining the concept of culture and how it basically affects the overall construct by which a person adjust to different types of situation that comes into his life. At the same time, the direction on how a person’s perception of self and life changes when he confronted with new things and new realizations in the face of exploring new culture is highlighted in the plots by which the characters in each story is subjected to.
